The American Dissident: Literature, Democracy & Dissidence

Raúl Rivero—Critical Poem

Released from a Cuban prison, thanks to international outrage, Rivero had been incarcerated for writings critical of Castro. Anything critical of the Cuban regime is interpreted as American capitalist subversion of the revolution, a fail-safe concept for eliminating criticism!  The editor's translation follows.

No dejo salir
al niño con el Coco. Yeni”.

Search Warrant
What are these men looking for
in my house?
What is this official doing
reading the sheet of paper
upon which I’ve written
the words ambition, frivolity, and fragility?

What suspicion of conspiracy
evokes the dedicated photo
of my father in guayabera
on the grounds of the Capitolio Nacional?

How does he interpret my divorce papers?

Where will his harassment techniques
lead him upon examining the lottery tickets
and discovering the war wounds of
my great grandfather?
Eight cops
examine my daughters’ writing and sketches
nosing into my personal life
and wanting to know where Andreíta sleeps
and what does her asthma have to do with
my folders?

They want the meaning of Zucu’s message
and of the top
of a cryptic note (here a slight triumphant smirk from one of them)
“Castles with music box.  Don’t let the kid leave with Coco.  Yeri.”
Along came a specialist in blank spaces
a literary critic with rank of interim chief
who explores with the barrel of his pistol
the covers of books of poetry.

Eight cops
in my house
with a search warrant
a cleansing operation
a complete victory
of the proletarian vanguard
which confiscates my Consul typewriter
one hundred forty-two blank pages
and a sad mound of personal papers
which were the most precarious
I had this summer.  [translation gts]
